Overview
Opioid use disorder is a chronic and treatable condition. The practice offers medication options alongside clinical monitoring and other support.
Options include buprenorphine products such as Suboxone, Sublocade, and Brixadi, as well as extended-release naltrexone under the brand name Vivitrol.
Buprenorphine options
Suboxone is a daily film containing buprenorphine and naloxone. Sublocade and Brixadi are extended-release buprenorphine injections administered on a schedule determined by the treating clinician.
These products differ in formulation, dosing, administration, and eligibility. A clinician must review current opioid exposure and treatment history before recommending or starting one.
Extended-release naltrexone
Vivitrol is a monthly injection containing naltrexone, an opioid antagonist. It blocks opioid receptors rather than partially activating them.
Naltrexone requires an opioid-free period before initiation. The required timing and safety plan must be determined by a qualified clinician because starting too soon can cause severe withdrawal.
