What addiction is
Addiction is a treatable condition. It is chronic, meaning symptoms can recur over time, and complex, meaning that factors such as genetics, personality, family, and environment can affect how the condition develops.
Substance or chemical addictions are now commonly described as substance-use disorders. Addiction can also involve behaviors such as gambling, sex, pornography, or food.
Common substance-use disorders
Common substance-use disorders involve alcohol, opioids—including heroin, fentanyl, and prescription painkillers—nicotine or tobacco, cannabis or THC, and cocaine.
Treatment information
Care begins with a clinical evaluation to understand your needs and discuss treatment options. For opioid use disorder, these may include medications such as buprenorphine and naltrexone.
