We use several medications to aid in treatment. In particular, two medications, ketamine and esketamine, have been shown to be effective in the treatment of specific conditions. Learn more about these treatments below.
Ketamine, an anesthetic medication, is now used as a cutting-edge treatment for depression and other conditions. We provide ketamine infusion services for patients with depression who have not responded to other treatments.
Although ketamine is not currently FDA approved for the treatment of depression, its effectiveness in treating depression is supported by over a decade of scientific research. Ketamine works through a different mechanism than typical antidepressants, typically providing more rapid results than traditional treatments. Not everyone responds to ketamine, but many patients report improvement within hours or days of their initial treatment.
Ketamine treatments are not covered by insurance. The cost of each treatment is $350.
Esketamine (Spravato™) is FDA-approved for treatment-resistant depression. It is chemically related to ketamine, which is also used to treat depression.
Given intranasally, esketamine must be administered and monitored in an approved clinic, and requires 2 hours of observation in the clinic following each administration.
The course of treatment is twice weekly for 4 weeks, then weekly to every other week indefinitely.
An evaluation in the office is required before approval for ketamine or esketamine treatment, even if patients have received ketamine treatments somewhere else in the past.
